California job applicants accuse In-N-Out of age, race discrimination

Earlier this month, two California residents filed a workplace discrimination lawsuit against the popular restaurant In-N-Out Burger. According to the class action lawsuit, it is nearly impossible to get a job at one of the many restaurant locations in the state if you are black and over the age of 40.

Discrimination, leave laws fail to protect all California workers

Federal and California medical leave laws and anti-discrimination laws benefit many employees who need to take time off of work because of an illness or to care for an immediate family member. But these laws can also prove to be not enough for workers in other situations.

California nurses settle discrimination lawsuit against hospital

Two years ago, a group of 69 nurses filed a workplace discrimination lawsuit against the hospital they had worked at in California. The workers were all immigrants and they were all Filipino. Although some of the nurses had worked at the facility for more than 20 years, the Filipino nurses began to experience harassment and bullying after the hospital had implemented a new "language policy" in 2006. The policy banned workers from speaking any language other than English.

Receptionist sues employer after patient made sexual comments

To keep the workplace safe for employees, Los Angeles and Long Beach employers must create and maintain an environment that is free of discrimination and harassment. This involves addressing any complaints of colleagues or supervisors harassing workers. But maintaining a safe work environment also means protecting workers who are harassed by customers, clients, patients or other individuals while doing their jobs.

California bill aims to prevent religion discrimination in workplaces

Last month on our Los Angeles / Long Beach employment law blog, we had mentioned that a former Disneyland worker, who is Muslim, was suing her employer because she was fired for wearing her head scarf to work. Many other similar lawsuits have been filed against employers in California citing religion discrimination in the workplace.

Injured handyman sues William Shatner for wrongful termination

For nearly 20 years, a handyman and his wife were employed by William Shatner and his wife to perform household repairs, chores and other duties at the couple's home in California. However, when the handyman suffered a workplace injury at Shatner's home, he claims that Shatner and his wife began to harass him.

California lawmakers pass state Domestic Workers Bill of Rights

Yesterday, many American workers were able to enjoy a day off of work as our country honored and celebrated Labor Day. Over the decades, workers in California and throughout the entire country have not only made significant contributions to improve protections and workplace conditions for employees in all types of occupations, workers have also made significant contributions to our economy.
