Two fired soccer coaches claim discrimination

Two coaches who were fired by a Los-Angeles based Major League Soccer team have filed a suit against their former employer claiming that they were wrongfully terminated. The two men claimed that they were fired due to race discrimination after the Mexican owner of team Chivas USA implemented a Latino-only employment policy in violation of state and federal law.

The coaches, both of whom are Caucasian, claim that the team's owner has a history of discrimination. They stated that the Chivas de Guadalajara, a Mexican team owned by the same man, refused to hire any players unless they were Mexican. This has been the team's alleged practice since 1908. The plaintiffs claim that the California team's climate changed during a meeting in November 2012 when employees were asked if they could speak Spanish. The plaintiffs believe that they were targeted after that meeting. They also claim that in the past few years, seven non-Latino employees have been terminated while no Latino employees have been fired.

The two coaches are both former professional soccer players and both played with the United States national team. They are seeking damages for harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination and discrimination by the team. The team has declined to comment on the pending litigation or to confirm or deny the reasons behind their hiring and firing practices.

A workplace discrimination attorney may represent those who have experienced wrongful termination or other illegal repercussions at their places of employment. Someone who has been wrongfully terminated due to race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender, age or ethnic background may be entitled to payment of damages from those responsible for their termination.
