Fast food workers strike in L.A.

Fast-food workers in Los Angeles and 59 other cities are on strike. The workers are employed by various chains, including McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Taco Bell. They are demanding that they get higher wages. The latest strike is part of a year-long campaign orchestrated by the workers to ask for more than wage and hour laws entitle them to.

The campaign began in New York City after workers went on strike for a series of events. Other cities adopted the campaign, including Chicago, Seattle and Detroit. The workers currently receive about $7.25 per hour, the federal minimum wage. They are asking for wages of $15 an hour. They also want to form unions, and they want assurances that they will not be targets of retaliation from their employers.

The average pay for fast-food workers in the United States is $8.94 per hour, but some fast-food companies claim that they provide good jobs and opportunities for advancement. McDonald's released a statement saying that the company provides competitive benefits to employees and that its history is ripe with stories about individuals who moved their way up inside and outside of the company.

A Los Angeles employment law attorney may be able to assist workers who feel that they have not been treated fairly. Workers may feel entitled to overtime pay and not receive it. Their employer may be paying them less than the national minimum wage requires. Other employees may have a claim against their employers if they are denied breaks or forced to work off the clock. An attorney could examine such claims and negotiate for compensation.
