Life Alert accused of age discrimination, sexual harassment

California-based Life Alert Emergency Response Inc. is being sued by a former employee who claims he was illegally terminated due to his age and cancer diagnosis and for speaking out against sexual harassment at the company. The $7 million lawsuit was filed in a New York state court on May 6.

The plaintiff claims he was fired without warning on Nov. 10, 2014, after more than a decade at Life Alert, which sells wearable alert devices for seniors and the disabled. The 71-year-old alleges he was let go due to his age and prostate cancer diagnosis. He also claims he was terminated in retaliation for speaking out about the sexual harassment of female employees at Life Alert's Manhattan office. According to the complaint, he observed a general manager harass female sales representatives by offering them promotions and leads in exchange for indulging his sexual advances. He says the company's chief executive brushed off his complaints about the alleged harassment by saying "nobody is forcing" the women to stay.

The plaintiff accuses Life Alert, which is based in Encino, of violating state labor law and state and city human rights laws. He is seeking damages and unpaid salary. The company declined comment.

No one should be forced to endure sexual harassment, age discrimination or retaliation while in the workplace. Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a hostile working environment may benefit by speaking with a lawyer. After carefully reviewing the complaint, a legal representative could suggest the best course of action. In some cases, a lawyer may advise filing a discrimination lawsuit against the responsible party or parties. If the claim is successful in court, an employee may be awarded damages.
