Walt Disney Pictures sued for discrimination

Walt Disney Pictures and the "Muppets" movie editor are being sued for wrongful termination, gender discrimination and harassment by an assistant film editor. The assistant film editor alleges that the California-based Walt Disney Pictures corporation created a hostile work environment for her due to the fact that she was Asian and over 40 years old. The complaint, filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on June 3, also states that the assistant film editor's employment was terminated by Walt Disney Pictures due to her gender and her race as well as complaints she made regarding her treatment and work environment.

In addition to these complaints, the assistant movie editor's statement alleges that while Disney stated that her position had been "eliminated," she was actually replaced by a male subordinate with less experience. She is reportedly seeking damages that include vacation pay, sick pay and lost wages. She is additionally claiming additional damages on the grounds that the "Muppets" movie editor allegedly made disparaging comments about her race and other women in the workplace.

The woman, who is a single mother, also alleges that the movie editor told her that she would need to choose between her career and her family. She has over 16 years of experience in the industry and has worked on films such as "Hot Tub Time Machine," "8 Mile," "Charlotte's Web," "Almost Famous" and "Vanilla Sky."

The assistant film editor's Los Angeles attorney will need to prove that she was treated differently based on her age and race. For individuals in similar situations, employment law attorneys may be able to identify specific instances of discrimination and harassment that may have occurred against them in order to help them recover lost wages as well as compensation for their mental and emotional distress.
