Victims of domestic violence might have been alarmed to hear that a teacher in California was fired from her job after security concerns arose about her estranged husband. After being wrongfully terminated, the teacher lobbied for legislatures to pass a new law that would make sure that no one else was subjected to the same kind of treatment that she was.
The woman had been a second grade teacher at Holy Trinity School in El Cajon when her estranged husband showed up in the parking lot of the school one day and prompted a campus lockdown. The couple had been divorced for two years, and the teacher had gotten a restraining order against her ex because he had been physically abusive to her. She stated that her principal had been aware of all that. However, that April she received a notice that she would not be teaching at the school for the upcoming school year because of her ‘unfortunate and challenging” situation. After her wrongful termination, she joined a senator who had already introduced legislation on the subject to push for reform.
The new law is designed to protect victims of domestic violence from being discrimination against because of their situations. It is supposed to keep them from losing their jobs at a critical point in their lives when they most need support and a steady paycheck. The new legislation is supposed to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.
