The University of California at Los Angeles has come under fire lately for issues surrounding workplace discrimination. Following on the heels of a large settlement in a discrimination lawsuit, a new report has come out giving a failing grade to university actions regarding prejudicial faculty practices.
In 2012, the chancellor of UCLA began a study investigating faculty concerns about discrimination at the university. The study’s panel consisted of five members who interviewed 30 members of UCLA’s administration and faculty. They found that the university failed to record and investigate incidents that if true would normally be violations of the university’s policies toward discrimination. The panel also found that the UCLA faculty was 73 percent white, compared to 17 percent Asian, 6 percent Latino and 3 percent African-American.
The study concluded that not enough was being done about workplace discrimination. The chancellor has responded by promising to appoint a discrimination officer to work full-time on investigations of university bias. This comes shortly after a lawsuit against the university was settled for $4.5 million in July, in which a former surgeon at the UCLA Medical School claimed that the university failed to stop racial discrimination and harassment against him. Additionally, the surgeon alleged that the university retaliated against him for bringing the suit.
