California residents might be interested in learning about a discrimination lawsuit that a former employee of Alexander McQueen filed on Nov. 6. The Hispanic woman, who had worked at the high-end British fashion house located in the posh Meatpacking District in New York City, alleged that her boss called her names and continually referred to her national origin in a negative manner. In addition, she said her employer falsely accused her of using cocaine and stealing at work. The 43-year-old said that the alleged abuse affected her job performance and ultimately resulted in her dismissal.
This is not the first time that Alexander McQueen has been accused of workplace discrimination. The retailer faced a racial discrimination lawsuit in July filed by an African-born former employee who had worked as a security guard at the luxury store. He alleged that he was subject to racially insensitive remarks from coworkers. He claimed that the retailer routinely profiled black customers, and he alleged that his depression and anxiety attacks resulted from his hostile work environment.
Although the Alexander McQueen store failed to comment, the company did release a statement via email. The company said that it was committed to workplace equality, and it was proud of its employee diversity. The statement asserted that it always investigates any allegations of employee discrimination seriously; however, it does not comment on individual cases.
Anti-discrimination laws protect people in the workforce; however, whether employers choose to follow those laws is another story. The Alexander McQueen employee believed that her boss had crossed the line, and she chose to file a lawsuit in order to seek compensation for the rights she thought her former employer had violated.
