More than 5,000 reports of sexual assaults in military for 2013

The military has always been known for being a closed institution. There are things that occur every day that the public doesn't know about or understand. However, in 2013 there were many high-profile sexual assaults, arrests and scandals involving the military.

The numbers for sexual assault incidents for 2013 have been released, and according to the Associated Press, that number is much higher than it was the previous year. In fact, for incidents involving everything from sexual harassment to serious sexual assaults, more than 5,000 such cases were reported.

The Marine Corps saw an increase of 86 percent in reported sexual assaults. The Air Force had a 45 percent increase. The Navy and the Army had increases of 46 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

Many associated with the military say that they don't believe the number of sexual assaults is going up - only the number of reported assaults is. The military has always pushed for victims to come forward when they experience such an assault; however, the culture of the military is one that emphasizes loyalty, toughness and rank. This makes it difficult for many victims to believe that the assaults should be reported.

The increase, though, could be because of new training programs that help military members understand exactly what constitutes a sexual assault or harassment. A recent, anonymous survey throughout the military branches showed that around 26,000 members of the Armed Forces had experienced some sort of "unwanted sexual contact or sexual assault."

Everyone has a right to feel safe in their workplace, and this includes sexual assault, unwanted sexual contact or sexual harassment. An experienced California employment law attorney can help victims learn more about their options in cases involving sexual harassment, wrongful termination and other illegal workplace activities.
