U.S. employees polled on sexual harassment

Some employees in California might benefit from learning more about recent data concerning sexual harassment trends in the American workplace. According to a Cosmopolitan survey polling over 2,200 female employees, around 33 percent of those ages 18 to 34 reported experiencing some degree of sexual harassment at the workplace. In addition to more blatant forms of aggression, subtle signs of sexual harassment may include innuendo posted on Facebook or even an indecent comment in a meeting.

According to the American Association of University Women, sexual harassment may be described as physical or verbal conduct of a sexual nature, requests for sexual favors or advances at the workplace that are unwelcomed. Among those who admitted to having experienced sexual harassment, 71 percent claimed to have never reported the incident. Results from the survey indicated that the women in service hospitality and food-related workplaces experienced the highest rates of sexual harassment.

The survey found that 16 percent of respondents may have been unaware that the behavior they experienced at the workplace qualified as sexual harassment. The study found that 81 percent of the respondents had experienced some degree of sexual harassment that was verbal. Among the women reporting sexual harassment, 64 percent were ages 19 to 29. The sectors reporting the lowest levels of sexual harassment were health care and education. Approximately 75 percent of the respondents were reportedly harassed by a male coworker.

People who have been victimized by sexual harassment may benefit from consulting legal counsel. An attorney might be able to examine the allegations and determine whether or not the employer is in violation of state or federal statutes. If so, complainants may be entitled to reinstatement, restitution or some other appropriate form of compensation. Attorneys may also be prepared to protect these employees from any retaliation or adverse action from an employer.
