Employees have specific rights in the workplace

Employees often think that they have to deal with whatever happens at work. This isn't at all the case. All employees have specific rights that they are entitled to when they are working. It is up to the employers to make sure that the employee's rights aren't being violated.

One of these rights is the right to privacy. Employers must keep employee information confidential. This includes everything from employees' personal phone numbers to their Social Security numbers. Nothing should ever be given out unless the employee gives permission or there is a legal obligation to provide the information, such as if there is a warrant for the information.

Workers are also entitled to a workplace free from discrimination and harassment. This means that supervisors, vendors, coworkers and patrons of the business shouldn't be allowed to act in a discriminatory or harassing manner toward employees. Forbidden types of actions include those against specific races, genders, religious groups and similar protected statuses.

Companies also have to make sure that employees are safe when they are at work. This includes providing a work place that is free from physical violence. Employees shouldn't have to worry about being attacked during their shift.

Employees also have the right to not have to deal with retaliatory actions if they file a formal complaint about an employee or the company. The key to this is that the complaint has to be factual. The employee has to still do his or her job in a suitable manner after the complaint is waged because it isn't retaliatory to fire an employee for failure to perform the job's duties.
