Employers cannot discriminate on the basis of gender

California employees should understand there is no place for discrimination in any type of workplace. Regardless of the type of job you have, you should never experience discrimination or negative treatment on the basis of your gender. If you are experiencing this treatment, you have the right to take action.

What if you're asked illegal questions in an interview?

Sometimes you don't even have to get hired by a company before you start experiencing discrimination. Too many people in positions of hirng employees don't know what subjects should be off-limits in interviews. Others know, but don't care or can't help themselves.

Can my boss deduct the cost of uniforms from my paycheck?

It is understandable that your employer wants to find ways to save money. After all, any waste comes out of its profits. Your boss likely has protocol in place for inventory and may purchase generic office supplies or buy in bulk. Unfortunately, such a frugal manager may also be reluctant to allow you to work beyond your 40 hours because that would mean paying you overtime.

Malicious termination finding leads to $7.97 million verdict

Malicious firing of employees is never something that should occur. Even though California is an at-will employment state, there are still limitations to terminations. For example, employers can't fire employees for making factual claims about the company or for filing workers' compensation claims.

Off-the-clock work may be against the law

There are few people in California fortunate enough to feel that their paychecks really reflect what they have earned. You may be among those who feel your time on the job is much more valuable than what your boss pays you per hour, but the thought of a raise may be out of the question.

Are you working off the clock?

Whether you punch a clock, log in on a computer or complete a time sheet, your time is valuable. You know that an extra minute can mean the difference between gaining or losing a quarter-hour of pay. You may also know that logging more than 40 hours a week means you will receive extra pay for overtime.

Victims of sexual harassment: Speak up and defend your rights

Sexual harassment continues to pervade society in spite of strict federal and state laws that prevent this abuse. The powerful protections offered under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 give women and men the right to healthy work conditions where sexual harassment doesn't exist. But is everyone exercising their rights in this regard? Unfortunately, no.
